The Time is Now

  • Museum of Gloucester Museum of Gloucester, Brunswick Road Gloucester United Kingdom (map)

Three brilliant Gloucester residents, three historic communities, three extraordinary portraits by renowned photographer Emilie Sandy. Facilitated by Dialect Writers CIC, ‘The Time Is Now’ is a unique heritage project capturing for the historical record the volunteers and community workers in Gloucester, who have worked so hard to support others in recent years.

These are not just pictures of individuals - each image has been co-created with the subject and the Gloucestershire Archives to represent Gloucester’s unique history, catch an exciting moment in time right now, and represent the real people of this city for future generations.

Rich in symbolism and powerful imagery, full of our stories of place and identity, this installation is also accompanied by a series of short films, created by local documentary maker Katherine Glynne-Jones - a must see for everyone who loves Gloucester’s history and community.

Time and Dates:

Saturday 25 October - Sunday 4 January

Location:

Ground Floor - Community Gallery

Tickets:

This exhibition is FREE to attend!

About this project from facilitator Emma Kernahan:

"As a support worker in Gloucester and a local history nerd, I was always struck by the absence of any images of ordinary people from the past who did the work of keeping the town thriving, and looking after those around them. We have scraps of information about them in the archives, but the luxury portraits we have now were reserved for the rich and the ‘VIP’s’. During the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, I saw individuals and communities do extraordinary things for each other, just as they always have in challenging times. This project is about making a record of that for future generations, something that catches the power and strength of those people and the real history of the place where they live.

It was incredible to have an international photographer and visual storyteller like Emilie Sandy on board, whose work is so playful and innovative, but has this steeliness running through it. And to be joined by Katherine Glynn-Jones to create this audio and video narrative - someone who really loves Gloucester and knows what it’s about -was just a dream. Lastly, I have been able to meet and get to know the three incredible women who are the subjects here. Our conversations have been really inspiring and have made me look at things in new ways - it’s been a real privilege to help bring their vision for their portraits to life."
