Hearing

Non soft close doors. Ground floor exhibits have rolling sound clips. Push button story telling in some areas. Hearing loops are installed on both the ground floor reception desk and the first floor gallery desk.

Visual

Uneven spotlighting on ground floor of museum. Glass standalone cabinets on ground floor exhibit space. Touch and feel objects available at request.

General

Concessionary rate for disable visitors for paid exhibitions. Complimentary ticket policy for carers. All staff have disability awareness training. The fire alarm uses both sirens and lights when activated.

The Museum tells the story of Gloucester throughout history, from dinosaurs and mammoths, to Celts and Romans, to the Middle Ages all the way to now.

To bring the story to life there are displays of fossils, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, glass, and silverware. Additionally, there are two exhibition spaces used to deliver a wide ranging and vibrant exhibition programme.

The Museum of Gloucester has a café and shop; providing refreshments, a space to relax and some retail therapy.

  • The museum can only be accessed from Brunswick Road. Do not use Eastgate Street, as the junction with Brunswick Road is for buses, taxis and bicycles only.

  • There is limited disabled bay parking to the front of the museum on Brunswick Road. There is a drop-off point outside the museum on Brunswick Road. The drop-off point does not have a dropped kerb. There are 2 public car parks located within 200 metres / 0.1 miles of the museum. Arrival

Street to entrance. There is sloped level access from the pavement to the museum entrance. The pavement is 1500 mm or more and made from a mix of brick and paving slabs. There is occasional portable signage outside the museum on the pavement. The main entrance to the museum is 1620 mm wide. The entrance uses side hung double automatic doors that open inwards.

Getting around inside

Ground floor reception desk

Main concourse area with access to information/ticketing and museum on right, shop/café to the left, and toilets straight ahead. Middle section of reception desk has a height of 76cm. High desk height 100cm. First aid kit and AED are located behind the desk.

Museum ground floor

There are 1200 mm wide double doors to enter the museum. Predominantly lite using spotlighting, creating some shadowed areas. Floor is a mix of carpet tiles, laminate and Entrance and exit points to part of Roman display are 920 mm wide. Please be aware there are human remains on display in the Roman area of the museum – please ask a member of staff for further information if needed. Sound effects (can also be seen on sensory map): Constant audio in Dinosaur and fossils area. Push button for audio at entrance of Romans/shrine road. Constant audio in Roman's gallery. Lift

The life is a platform lift. The call button will unlock and open the door, once it is on the needed floor. The doors are 1050mm wide and open outward. The door to exit is on the opposite side to the door entered. There are 2 floors, ground and 1st, the lift will indicate which floor the user is on. The maximum weight for the lift is 400 kg, recommended 2 persons at one time. The lift takes 46 seconds to go from one floor to another.

Steps

33 steps in total. Going up there are 12 steps, a landing space, then a further 11 steps to the first floor.

Museum first floor

Natural and artificial lighting. Suspended wooden floor, treated, and polished wood – can be slippery in places.

Gallery Desk

Change of flooring from wood to lino. Spotlighting.

Exhibition Hall

Mix of spotlight, overhead lights and music playing in the gallery.

Toilets

Located on the ground floor by reception. No radar key or permission needed to use the toilets. Changing place Baby change Unisex Disabled Each toilet has: sink, soap dispenser, mirror, hand drier.

Museum gift shop

2 entrance points, throughway to the café. The minimum width within the shop space is 110cm. Multiple displays and island.

Café

Entrance through the shops space, no doors. Level wood flooring. Movable wooden tables. The café is self-service - if table service is required please ask staff.

  • You can hire mobility equipment from Gloucester Shopmobility by calling 01452 302871 or visit the website. Gloucester Shopmobility is 120 metres / 0.1 miles from the Museum of Gloucester. There is a space to charge mobility scooters/battery powered wheelchairs, please ask a member of staff.

  • We have emergency evacuation procedures that cover all visitors. There is an evac-chair located on the first floor by the lift.
