A retrospective exhibition of Rizpah Amadasun…
Local Artist Rizpah Amadasum is exhibiting in the Community Gallery at the Museum of Gloucester until end of December 2021. Rizpah has been selected to attend the Royal College of Art London; this exhibition celebrates her work and this success as a local artist.
Rizpah's artwork explores identity in positive Black narratives which celebrate solidarity, joy and our interconnected roots. As an Anglo-African conceptual artist, Rizpah is influenced by West African symbolism and the way it tells a story about belief, history, and empowerment.
At present her work is defined by rich warm portraits full of vibrant colours. Unlimited by ideas of traditional canvas; Rizpah's work includes body painting, set designs, and a collection of Afrocentric bomber jackets featuring hand-painted artwork in her clothing line, Rizzen.

Is community where we live? Is it the people we choose to spend time with? Is it the food we eat? If you had to pick an object to represent your community, what would it be?
Our communities may look or sound or talk like us, or they may come from shared lineage. Communities intersect with culture, race, politics, religion and identity. People can belong to more than one community and a community is defined by those that belong to it.
CommUNITY was co-curated by Rider Shafique.
The exhibition includes photography from Rider’s Identity series and two films produced for the Gloucester History Festival | City Voices and the Gloucester Culture Trust.
Kwanzaa | Dec 2020-Jan 2021
Kwanzaa is a festival of culture, family, food, music and poetry. It is celebrated by Black communities all over the world from 26th December to 1st January.
Pronounced, “kwahn-zuh” it comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya Kwanza”, meaning “first fruits of the harvest”. It was created in 1966 as a way to share and celebrate racial pride and unity within Black communities all focusing on Nguzo Saba (the Seven Principles).
Kwanza was co-curated by Kulcha Lee, Community Advocate, Artist, Musician and Youth Worker.
The exhibition shared the seven principles and seven symbols of Kwanzaa and included artwork and memorabilia collected over many years of celebrating this festival in the South West.
